　　Feelings ran high as the 100-day countdown to the Beijing Olympics began. Nevertheless，the 8.0-magnitude earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan Province on  Monday afternoon，May 12，2008 came as a blight to our happiness. Tens of thousands of our compatriots fell victim to the sudden catastrophe，causing a crushing sorrow to all of us.

　　The year of 2008 is not an easy year for us Chinese people. It has witnessed a catalogue ofdisasters and misfortunes，but as well as waves of patriotism.

　　It was still fresh in our mind that the sleet wreaked terrible havoc in Hunan Province in early February，which cast a shadow on the whole of this year. Without even shaking off the bad memories，we had been deeply distressed over Tibetan separatists’ riot in Lhasa in March. The whole experience was like a hideous nightmare.

　　Shortly afterwards，violent disruptions of the overseas legs of the Beijing Olympic torch relay in April sent shock waves through the entire nation. Here comes May，a thoroughly miserable month when this country has been riven by a devastating earthquake. It is just as an ancient saying goes：“Misfortunes never come alone.”

　　In the face of such national calamities，the Chinese people are bound in honour to unite together through thick and thin. We all make massive efforts to stretch out a helping hand on our own initiative. Large donations have come flooding into the disaster areas from all over the country. The anti-quake battle is a matter of life and death，but we’ll surely combat the disaster at full stretch and fight to the bitter end by virtue of our courage，perseverance and particularly our benevolence！

　　北京奥运会100天倒计时的开始使我们群情激昂。然而，2008年5月12日下午发生在中国西南部四川省的8级地震使我们的喜悦黯然失色。令我们极度悲痛的是，数以万计的同胞在这场突发灾祸中不幸罹难。

　　于我们而言，2008年并不安宁。它见证了接二连三的灾难与不幸，但同时也见证了中国人民的爱国热潮。

　　2月初湖南的雪灾至今仍然历历在目，这场浩劫使这一整年都处在阴影之中。尚未摆脱这段沉痛的回忆，我们又为3月藏独分子在拉萨的暴乱深感忧虑，这整个经历就像一场可怕的噩梦。不久以后的4月，奥运火炬全球传递受阻，在国民心中引起巨大冲击波。这个惨淡的5月，我们的国家又被强震所破坏……真如俗话所说：祸不单行。

　　国难当头，中华民族义不容辞地团结在一起，同甘共苦、不畏艰险。我们都作出极大的努力，主动向灾区人民伸出援手。大量的捐助像潮水般从全国各地涌来。这场抗震战斗是生死攸关的事，但凭借我们的勇气与毅力，尤其是我们的爱心，我们必将全力以赴奋战到底！
